Today in class, Professor Christopherson was talking about fairness in the economy and in our lives. He explained the object of fairness in question: the big names in our lives today (Gates, Nordstrom, Weyerhauser, etc.) never went to public school a day in their life. They had been rich all their life and amassed even more wealth in their prime. For students at BC, the government and college subsidizes 80% of our tuition and students pay the remaining 20%. Is that fair? Seattle University’s tuition alone costs somewhere close to $30,000 but without those government subsidies, students need to find help elsewhere.
Another topic we covered was the fairness or unfairness of having nurturing parents who spent time reading and teaching you versus the crack-addicted mother who doesn’t have the attention span to care if her child is in school. The title quote is mainly pointing at what type of parents you had. Those that helped to nurture your intellect and had the money to pay for a private education nurtured your skills above others. Therefore, in our example about yourself and a roommate, you had the absolute advantage (having the background of nurturing parents).
