Today, my Econ professor (Bruce Christopherson, Bellevue College) handed out our class syllabus and talked to us about his grading methods. We are required to write 3 two-page essays throughout the quarter. The average grade on it is 2.8/4.0. The following is my best recollection of the lecture.
The papers are graded on a curve. So, (draws bell curve on board with 2.8 in the middle) here is the usual curve. Most people are gonna be in this mid-section. There may be some students who manage to get these higher grades and others who are down in the D/F range. If your class’ set of papers was the most amazing papers I have ever seen, the average will be 2.8. If your class’ papers were the suckiest papers I have ever seen, the average is still 2.8. In short, you are competing against the other students in this class.
But for tests, that’s another story. For papers, I curve them. For tests though, if your class does well, you’re all winners. But if all your tests sucked, you all suck.
Today’s class had to be the most entertaining class yet. This class is definitely the highlight of my school day.
